Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental disorder that first manifests early in childhood and continues throughout a person's life, affecting their ability to communicate, as well as their behaviour. Symptoms of ASD include challenges with social skills such as avoiding eye contact, inappropriate facial expressions, and the failure to recognize nonverbal cues in others, such as their facial expression and tone of voice.
Some children who are afflicted with ASD may start to develop age-appropriate communication skills only to regress later. For example, a child who has started to communicate with words such as “Daddy” or “No!” might suddenly abandon the use of language altogether; another sign is when a child loses interest in playing a favourite game, such as “Peek-A-Boo” or “Patty Cake”. Regressive behaviours such as loss of speech, babbling, or the loss of attained social skills are warning signs for the presence of autism and should be addressed right away.
ASD cannot be cured, but can often be managed effectively with treatment. The Family Psychology Place offers Autism Spectrum Disorder treatments in Calgary that include educational and behavioural interventions and alternative therapies that help patients manage the symptoms that impede social and academic performance and disrupt their home life.
